Empire is Back… On Sep 23rd… at 9… 8 Central

Last season a show premiered that captured the imagination of the nation, and I don’t mean that hyperbolically. Empire, the FOX drama created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, premiered to 9.9 million viewers and closed its season with 17.6 million viewers. The show was the 5th most watched show in America last season and the 2nd most watched by the 18-49 demo that advertisers care about.

Did you miss the show? The first season only had 12 episodes, so you could marathon it and not feel too burned out by the time season 2 premiers next Wednesday.

Season 2 will have 18 episodes, and while this seems like it’s a good thing (more Cookie? Yes, Please!) I’m worried that it’s going to be too much. Empire plays like a soap opera, and while this can lead to some great dramatic moments, it can also go on too long. 12 feels like the right amount amount of episodes because the audience can feel the highs and lows in a somewhat predictable way. We know that each storyline will have an end sooner rather than later, and we don’t have to wait too long to get that resolution.

I can’t say what happened at the end of season 1 in case you haven’t seen it, but it set things up really well for the new showdown that is coming on season 2. And while I like the music on Empire, having extra episodes just to have extra songs will seem like filler.

I am looking forward to seeing Cookie, Jamal, and the rest of the characters again to see how they change this season.

As an added bonus  Gabourey Sidibe (Becky, Executive Assistant to the Lyons) and Ta’Rhonda Jones (Cookie’s Assistant) are both cast members for season 2.

Have you seen the show? What are you looking forward to? Do you think 18 is too many episodes or do you say the more the better? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I can’t wait!!! Lee Daniels succeeded and more. He wanted to develop a Dallas-like, urban show..the drama, family dynamics/fighting, suspense, comedic retrieve with music. I think you may be right with the length. Guess we’ll see.
